Welcome! Not only to my kitchen, but also to my heart!
The recipe’s you find here are a combination of, first and foremost, influences from my mom’s and mother in law’s cooking. Neither of them had very much written down. They cooked everything from all that they learned growing up; the things they liked, the adaptations they made along the way in connection to what ingredients were available, as well as catering to the preferences within their families.
As the years passed, the desire to try to create and document recipes for the things our moms cooked for us became not only a hobby but a passion. Cooking is an art, and each of us bring our own creativity and preferences to it, which will mean, rarely will we be able to make many things exactly like someone else makes it or made it. There is a saying in Hungarian that goes something like, “as many kitchens, as many ways” of making things. I say, as many people, as many ways, because even within a household, everyone brings their own preferences to everything they make.
Many of us only realize once our loved ones have passed how much was lost with their passing when things weren’t written down.
With the internet, and so many cooks around the world, demonstrating and documenting all kinds of ways of making things, opportunities abound for us to see and experience many ways of making the traditional and not so traditional dishes we enjoyed around our family tables. There is not “a single way” of making anything. But there are ways that feel more familiar to some and less familiar to others. These recipes are just one offering within the millions of offerings from around that world of how recipes have evolved within the Cser/Vidakovics and Marton/Fulop family through my interpretations.
May you find recipes here that not only nourish your bodies, but also feeds your soul.
From Hungarian traditional recipes passed on through the generations – to family and friend’s favorites, collected along the way – I hope you can find something delicious to create, enjoy and share!
Much love!
